Fiel Youth Conference

We just got home from spending the week at the 4th annual Fiel Youth Conference. It took place at a camp in the mountains called Valle dos Cedros-Valley of the Cedars. More than 200 college-age young people were in attendence. The theme of the Conference was "Standing Firm on a Great God". One of our speakers was Pastor Kendall Holley from Louisiana. (pictured below with Rick's parents) It was a fun time of growth for all! James had fun with his many girlfriends on the playground. James and I trying to keep warm as we were "Clue Givers" during a treasure hunt. James made friends with eveyone. In fact, they started calling him the conference mascot. We enjoyed a ride on a paddle boat during one of the afternoon breaks.

On Saturday, we invited the guys to come and play a game of soccer out at the ranch. Actually, it was their idea and we were happy to have them over. They were one man short from making two even teams so guess who volunteered to play? What was I thinking? I hadn't played soccer for 5 years! I was the only gal out on the field, ( no girls play soccer in Brazil) and I prayed the whole time that I wouldn't twist my ankle or pull a muscle! It was a lot of fun and I think the guys were impressed with my playing. Shocked is probably a better word to use! Rick and I had a great time, however, we have been limping from sore muscles the whole weekend! After, the game, some of the fellows jumped into the icy pool and then called it a day and went home. Oh, I forgot to mention on the way out to the ranch, we saw a motorcycle accident. Actually, we didn't see it happen but drove up just minutes after. The two teenage boys were hurt but still alive........as for their motocycle, it burned up in the middle of the road. It appears no other cars were involved. I think they were speeding and lost control. Unfortunately, this is something that happens often in this country.

Last night we took James to the circus. We arrived about 15 minutes late as I got a late start in feeding James his dinner. So we walked into the big tent during the show and James had no idea what was going on. He had a death grip around my neck but after a few minutes he lessened his hold. I wish I could give you a comparison of circuses in the states but I have no memories of this when I was a child. The highlight of the event had to be the two giant, healthy-looking giraffes they led out on leashes. All the children in the stands ran down to the center of the ring and were handed carrots to feed the giraffes. Rick carried James on his shoulders to pet these beautiful animals. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take photos. James loved the whole thing; what an amazing experience for our little guy!
